On 09th August 2016, Hon. Buddhika Pathirana, a young parliamentarian from the Sri Lanka Parliament submitted a motion proposing to formulate a National Evaluation Policy and evaluation system for the country.

It was a historical day for the Sri Lanka parliament and the debate held was very interesting. Hon. Buddhika Pathirana made an excellent speech by bringing examples from different countries. Then other MPs joined the debate by supporting the motion.

The responsible ministry provided assurances that the government will take the actions necessary to strengthen evaluation including adoption of the National Evaluation Policy to support implementation of the SDGs. This achievement was implemented by the Parliamentarians' Forum for Development Evaluation together with the government, supported by the EvalGender+ project in Sri Lanka. The project has planned a series of capacity building programmes and will continue to lobby for equity focused and gender responsive evaluation in Sri Lanka.
